Q:How does temperature affect the physical properties and long-term performance of silicone rubber products?


A:Temperature has a significant influence on silicone rubber's elasticity, hardness, and lifespan-but unlike most elastomers, silicone maintains stability across a wide range.

 

  1. Low Temperatures: Silicone rubber remains flexible even at –60 °C, and some special formulations can withstand –100 °C without cracking. At these low temperatures, the material's hardness slightly increases, but it does not become brittle like most organic rubbers.
  2. High Temperatures: Standard silicone grades can continuously operate between +200 °C and +230 °C. High-temperature-resistant formulations (using special fillers and platinum catalysts) can tolerate up to +300 °C. At elevated temperatures, however, compression set may increase, and prolonged exposure can lead to gradual loss of mechanical strength.
  3. Thermal Aging Resistance: Silicone rubber's inorganic Si–O backbone provides excellent resistance to thermal oxidation, allowing it to maintain elasticity for thousands of hours at high heat-making it ideal for engine gaskets, oven seals, and LED components.
  4. Thermal Cycling: Silicone also handles rapid temperature fluctuations very well, with minimal expansion or contraction, which prevents leaks and deformation in dynamic sealing applications.

 

So, silicone rubber's unique thermal stability-from extreme cold to intense heat-is one of its greatest advantages, giving it a longer service life and broader application range than most other elastomer materials.
